Online Education: Part Of A Changing Industry.
Online Education: Part Of A Changing Industry. In 1997 Glenn Jones launched Jones International University. This became the first accredited fully web based university and helped shaped what has become a rapidly changing industry. Prior to that you could go back several decades and find education opportunities being offered that were accessed using a computer. The use of the Internet using desktop, laptop, tablets, and smartphones now make online education possible in a virtual way regardless of where you live in the world. All you need is Internet access. So what can we expect looking ahead? Consider other markets to get a look at what could happen here: 1. Amazon. They changed the way we buy books. More then ever people read ebooks then hard copy books. 2. Netflix. You can now rent movies online. You choose whether to have them accessed via email with a dvd or instantly online. Redbox is having an impact here as well eliminating the need for movie rental stores such as Blockbuster or Hollywood video. Will higher education go the same route? It's not likely although the number of people getting their degree will increase thanks to online education. People who would not have gone to college due to costs and time can now do so around their own schedule. Instead of going to class you can now log on to go to class. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on general class requirements to get a degree you can now by-pass those and focus strictly on relevant studies. For students who can afford it going away to college is still a great way to find out what you want to be when you grow up. Of course the social aspects of college can not be overstated either. You can not get this with an online education, although there is still Facebook and Twitter to help out.
