Rick Reilly Calls Tiger a “God,” but Urges Fans to Root for Phil. Pastor Responds
Famed sports writer Rick Reilly, fresh off his first ABC TV appearance where he wrongly assured the nation that Big Brown was a lock in the Belmont, has declared Tiger Woods a “God” in his US Open preview column. However, other than that apparently accurate declaration, Reilly was way off in his opinion that rooting for Tiger to win makes no sense.
His entire column is linked below. The Pastor e-mailed him the following response:
Dear Rick:
As the “Pastor of the First Church of Tiger Woods” (www.tigerwoodsisgod.com) I was glad to see you properly refer to Tiger as a “God” in your Tiger/Phil piece.
However, I must object to your assertion that watching Tiger win is boring and meaningless. Even as someone who normally roots for the underdog in sports, I get the greatest joy out of Tiger’s conquests. At its core, I believe this is because when Tiger wins, the human species gets somehow vindicated. Let’s face it, human beings suck. The evidence is overwhelming (and goes way beyond just Washington, D.C.). And yet this fatally flawed species has somehow managed to produce this man who has nearly perfected an endeavor that was always thought to be totally immune to perfection. And he has done so while meeting and exceeding the loftiest of expectations on and off the field of play in an era where our heroes almost universally end up disappointing us.
While you scoff at Tiger victories as just another step on the inevitable road to shattering Jack Nicklaus’ records (how numbed to his greatness have we become when breaking records no one ever thought were remotely in reach is suddenly considering dull before it even happens??!), I see each of them as giving us far more real “hope” in the potential of this sad species than Barack Obama could ever dream of providing. If Tiger victories are boring, I hope we all get bored to death.
